Starting in 1948, the statue of Kannon was carved into the rock surface of the Oya Stone Quarry by the Oya Tourism Association and local volunteers. It was created as a memorial to the war dead and to pray for world peace. In 1951, Professor Asajiro Tobita of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music took over the project. It was completed in December 1954, and a consecration ceremony was held in May of 1956. The height of the statue is roughly 27 meters. The statue is now maintained as part of Oya Park, It is visited by many tourists every year.
